New South Wales Enforces Stricter Regulations on Illegal E-Bikes

Government Grants Police Authority to Seize and Destroy Non-Compliant Electric Bicycles

New South Wales Enforces Stricter Regulations on Illegal E-Bikes?w=400

In a decisive move to enhance public safety and address community concerns, the New South Wales (NSW) Government has introduced new legislation empowering police to seize and destroy illegal electric bicycles (e-bikes) that exceed prescribed power limits.
This initiative, announced by NSW Transport Minister John Graham, aims to curb the proliferation of modified e-bikes that pose risks to both riders and pedestrians.

The crackdown responds to growing frustration over 'souped-up' e-bikes and associated anti-social behavior. Under the amended 'hoon laws,' police can now confiscate and crush e-bikes without the need for a court process, streamlining enforcement and deterrence efforts.

To effectively identify non-compliant e-bikes, the government has procured three portable dynamometer units from the Netherlands. These devices measure power output and ensure that e-bikes adhere to the NSW limit, which mandates that power assistance must cut out at 25 km/h.

It's important to note that the new laws do not require e-bikes to be registered, a proposal previously considered but not implemented. Instead, the focus remains on ensuring that e-bikes meet existing power and speed regulations. Bikes exceeding these limits are classified as motorbikes and are subject to different legal requirements.

Similar measures have been implemented in Western Australia, where police have seized and crushed over 30 overpowered e-bikes in January 2026 alone. This coordinated approach underscores a nationwide commitment to regulating e-bike usage and enhancing public safety.

For e-bike owners and potential buyers in NSW, it's crucial to understand and comply with these regulations. Ensuring that e-bikes meet legal standards not only avoids legal repercussions but also contributes to safer shared spaces for all road users.

As the popularity of e-bikes continues to rise, staying informed about local laws and regulations is essential. Prospective buyers should verify the compliance of e-bikes with NSW standards before purchase, and existing owners should refrain from modifying their bikes in ways that could render them illegal.
