The New South Wales (NSW) Government has announced plans to introduce stringent regulations targeting illegal electric bicycles (e-bikes) that exceed prescribed power limits.
This initiative aims to enhance public safety and address community concerns regarding the proliferation of overpowered e-bikes on public roads and pathways.

Under the proposed legislation, NSW Police will be granted the authority to seize and destroy e-bikes that do not comply with legal standards. This move aligns NSW with Western Australia's existing measures, where similar laws have led to the seizure and destruction of numerous illegal e-bikes.

Transport Minister John Graham emphasized the government's commitment to public safety, stating that the new laws are part of a broader package of measures to be rolled out in the coming weeks. The legislation is expected to be introduced to parliament by mid-2026, though the exact date of implementation remains unspecified.

The National Roads and Motorists' Association (NRMA) has welcomed the proposed measures, urging the community to support the government's efforts to regulate e-bike usage and ensure the safety of all road users.

For e-bike owners and prospective buyers, it is crucial to be aware of and adhere to the legal specifications regarding e-bike power limits to avoid penalties and contribute to safer shared spaces.
